The "Oh My, We're Going to Die" Annual Crocheted Blanket

Updated: Nov 4

Hand crocheting with a gold hook and colorful yarn inside a moving car, blurred road and trees visible through the windshield.

It's that time of year to go to the craft store to pick out more yarn!!!

Every year I crochet a huge blanket, normally starting it around Thanksgiving and finishing it around February. I'm not talented at crocheting and only know one pattern in which there is zero counting and the stitch remains the same during the entire project.

The purpose behind my blanket is not to stay warm or provide my family with a handcrafted item. The blanket's only job is to keep my hands busy and keep my eyes distracted from the road during our multiple holiday car rides between Michigan and Indiana.

Why would I need to keep my eyes distracted during my holiday travels?

It's because of my driver....the husband...he doesn't even deserve a name for this post!

The repeated double stitch and the rhythmic rotation of the hook in and out of the yarn helps me keep my cool and my voice lowered while he drives like a race car driver down the road. Crocheting a blanket keeps my eyes off of our car while we quickly dart in between other cars like we are playing Donkey Kong in a Mario Kart racing game. Keeping my hands white knuckled on the crochet hook keeps them from being white knuckled on the car's front dash when he makes an extremely hard stop where we "almost" collide with the car in front of us. The beautiful colors of my blankets keeps my mind tranquil throughout the bumper to bumper driving where it seems like we are chipping the paint off the cars around us.

Anyone else have problems riding shotgun with their other half....or is it just me?

I truly believe my "Oh My, We're Going to Die" blanket has saved me from death of a heart attack soooooo many times. Every time I look up from my stitches as the hubby does yet ANOTHER hard stop, I regret it. I tell myself....Just look at the blanket, Kelly, LOOK at the blanket and God will take care of the rest. Kelly, you have absolutely no control over how he drives, but you DO have control over crocheting your simple blanket.

Every blanket I've ever made in the car has so much prayer power woven into its thousands of stitches, that it gives me comfort knowing anyone using my blanket is quite literally covered by prayer. Not only simple, poetic prayer, but prayer of extreme passion and fervency! Because of my dear husband, our linen closet is bursting at the bits with homemade "Oh My, We're Going to Die!" crocheted blankets.

Every time he says, "Kelly, why are you making another blanket? We have too many!" I just look at him, and shake my head.

Thanks for reading my Country Squawk and safe driving during this holiday season,

Kelly

PS My next book signing event will be on Saturday, November 15 at the Salem-South Lyon Library at 11:00 am. I'll have copies of my new book, Pastor Jay, available for purchase. Hope to see my Michigan readers there!

I suspect everyone married person in North America thinks his or her spouse drives either too fast or too slow. My coping mechanism when my wife is driving is to play "Words With Friends" on my cell phone.

Love it! Great idea for those of us who aren't able to read in a moving car. If you run out of room in your closet, maybe try making several smaller ones - lap size - and donate to a nursing home?
