If I Fits, I Sits...A Chicken's Guide to Finding the Perfect Meeting Spot with the Flock

Like most birds, chickens love to perch (a bird's way of sitting) on trees and branches to rest, clean, and socialize with the rest of their flock. In the coop, I have wooden roosting bars for the chickens to perch at night where they all fight over who gets to sit next to the rooster on the top roosting bar. In this post, I'm about to share some unusual places I have caught my girls perching around the farm as a meeting spot for the rest of the flock.

One of my favorite things to do is collecting junk off the road to put around my chicken coop. Chickens are natural busybodies and have to check out everything I add to their home. One of the first "free items" I found off Facebook Marketplace was a swing. I was tired of the girls pooping all over the swing by my front door, so I brought this one home...The Chicken Swing. They love it! Sometimes in the afternoon, I catch a whole group of chickens swaying in the breeze.

Chickens are wannabe flyers...they truly want to be up in the great blue sky flying with the geese and the ducks. But unfortunately, they can only flap their wings fast enough to fly onto smaller trees like the apple trees growing in my front yard. One night while I was closing up the coop, I felt like I was being watched. Sure enough, when I looked up, I found three white beauties trying to sleep outside under the stars for bedtime. Every night I hear predatory owls hooting in the woods around my house, so I pulled "The Three Stooges" down from their apple tree and put them inside the coop, safe from any Hooters.

When it rains, the chickens hate getting wet. Rain makes their feathers heavier and makes them feel hotter, especially in the summer. During a rainstorm, all the girls gather tightly inside their tiny run with very little space to walk around. I felt sorry for them, so when I found a free playhouse on Facebook Marketplace, I jumped in my truck and picked it up for them. Now they have additional shelter during rain and snow storms.

BUT, 70 chickens can't fit inside just one playhouse, so at the Annual Church Rummage Sale this summer, I bought this beauty too. It even comes complete with a mailbox for all the Squawk's fanmail, haha! The chickens love to perch in the windowsills of their playhouses. The kids and I are going to get our paintbrushes out this summer to make them extra pretty for the girls.

While I was working outside in the vegetable garden one day, I set my wheel barrel down to grab a trowel from the shed. When I came back, Betty was perfectly happy perching on the wheel barrel not caring that she was slowing down my gardening project. She was so cute that I had to quickly find my phone to take a picture before getting my hands back in the dirt again.

Penny, in this picture, is perching on the coop's rocking chair, or as I should name it, "The Pooping Chair". I guess since chickens don't have a toilet, they think this is the next best spot to do their business.

A staple every farm has is a stack of wooden pallets. My husband and I have found so many uses for pallets around the farm and so have the chickens. For some reason, this is one of their favorite perches and social gatherings. I catch them taking baths together every single day on this stack of pallets.
My kids have grown so much that they are too big to ride the miniature riding Jeep they got for Christmas several years ago. Since that Jeep held so many memories for me, I couldn't get rid of it....so I put it beside my coop for the girls to enjoy. As you are probably catching on, I love giving the chickens new toys to play with. They are super entertaining to watch.

Believe it or not, I could continue to share cute pictures of my chickens for the rest of the day, my phone is filled to the brim with chicken pictures! But, some of my readers have been asking about Blonde's baby. I've finally figured out which chick out of the 15 I hatched in March is Blonde's...and....He's A Boy!!!
Meet Blonder, and boy, is he going to be a handsome devil! His face looks just like Blonde's face. It's just like having her back in the flock again.
Thanks for reading my Country Squawk,
Kelly

I had no idea that chickens could fly at all, even to get into the lower branches of trees. Amazing.
